Before you scroll down and begin you journey through this weeks photos, I need to explain the condition they are in. Around ten months ago I received a dozen or so photo's via email from a undisclosed sender. I can only assume they were survivors from the Lone Grove Tornado last Spring ,by some of the contents the email contained. I have been working for several months to restore them, although thier quality are quite poor, I feel their significance to our heritage over shadow their imperfections.
This is the first working announcers tower used by the Ardmore Timing Association. Note the one speaker atop the building. I don't believe there were any working timing equipment at this time.It appears that J.R. Shaw and Eugene Riotte are leaned into the opened front discussing a situation probably with Dennis Lavers.
Here we have a obscure image of the man that made it happen. Mr. J.R. Shaw. you can see the overhead opened front doors.
These over head doors had the below charts affixed to them.
You would read the time on the single Chrondex timer and convert it over to the timed lane MPH.
I have receipts Mr.Shaw saved from the purchase of Ardmore Drgaway's first timing equipment. Remember the first set only timed one lane. the cost #62a single lane timer $1562.00 and two portable surface wiring reels, $90.00
total cost $1622.00. That was a large investment in 1964.
Below is the original Chrondex timers used at Ardmore Dragway for over two decades. I will do a follow up story on these in the future.
In the left lane is the legendary Black Dodge of J.R,Shaws. The car is as infamous as Mr. Shaw himself. I believe that would be Joe McReynolds flag starting.
Linda Self to the left, yours truly with my back to the camera and my mom leaning on Glen Selfs Chevy Two.
Radiator Bill Freemans 6 cylinder Chevrolet pick up.
Now I now your saying what in the world is this. Actually it's the only photo I have of someone running the cows off the end of the strip.
Bogle and Smiths small block Anglia on a test pass.
Again I apologize for the poor quality of the photo's. My list of Ardmores to 50 car's is now over 400. It's amazing the car' that keep showing up on your list. See you soon at the races....Rob
