Auto Fans Unite For Safety
There is a sign of safety on several cars in Ardmore.
It is a small plaque dangling under the rear bumper and
it shows raised cross flags and the words SLOWPOKES.
That was the headline April 10 1955 in Ardmore's local news
paper the Daily Ardmorite.
The Slowpokes : A Hot Rod organization formed by a group
of responsible auto enthusiasts, dedicated to promoting
interest in the sport, wherever it may be found, and who in
some day hope to unveil to the public the true meaning
of the words Hot Rod.
It's first members who organized the club could be found
on the top of local law enforcement traffic violators list.
Still they pledged to safe and lawful driving and traffic
courtesy.
The club had full support of traffic Capt. Lawton Smithers,
who said if they can live up to what they are trying to do,
will be the most useful thing that ever happened in the way
of traffic enforcement.
The Slowpokes were established March 20 1955. President
Norman Flowers and included Jim Ragland, Joe Neil Carrell,
Dodle Dudley, Robert Boucher, Leland Cavner, Junior Woods,
Lloyd Ray Smith, Shirl Conway, And Gilbert Rose as the first
ten members.
Initiation fee was $2.50, which included the plaque. Dues were
$1.00 per month, and meetings held every other Monday at
a local high School.
The main hope of the club was to obtain a space near
Ardmore to build a quarter mile drag strip.
The club was not alone in their efforts, not only was local
law enforcement backing their efforts. A west coast
organization calling it's self N.H.R.A. was lending
support and information to club member Joe Carrell on club
and drag strip safety guidelines.
Club members gather at Jim Ragland's home. summer 1955
Next time the Korean Conflict connection.....
Until then see you at the drags...........Rob Ragland
