Shaw's Dodge
Drag racing stories of the past are full of folk hero style drivers and their legendary machines.
In the 1960's the Ardmore Timing Association drag strip, (as it was named in that era) was no exception. J.R. Shaw is considered the father of todays Ardmore Dragway. He was the last president of the Slow Poke car club and helped influence the City of Ardmore to leasing the present day strip location
to the club.
Ask anyone who ever attended the strip in the early years, they all remember one thing. The 1963 black 330. Simply known as SHAW'S DODGE.
J.R.'s black 330 Dodge came from the Chrysler Corporation as a legal NHRA stocker. It was equipped with a 330 wedge motor, blue printed to the Ramchargers specs. Dual AFB carburetors that
sat on an aluminum cross ram intake. Factory dump exhaust, a 727 candymatic transmission hooked to a 3.91 ratio 8 3/4
rear end. The only option on the car was a heater and roll up windows. The 330 had light weight body panels that included an aluminum hood and deck lid. The little Dodge ran 12 second e.t.'s with the aid of sticky Atlas Buchron street tires.
The Dodge did not compete every Sunday, but occasionally J.R. would challenge the daily winner to race for a larger trophy or go home empty handed if he lost to the dodge. The trunk was full of the lost trophies. I have been told it the Dodge was beat a few times but not very often.
The car was eventually sold to Bobby Rose of Ardmore and it's whereabouts unknown today.
But I can promise you one thing. J.R. is counting spectators from Heaven on Sunday and would still take on the winner in his Dodge today.
