A few weeks ago I was working with a journalist buddy of mine in California and he mentioned that he had lost his rent a car keys that morning at breakfest..Some hours later as we were doing lunch he found them in his sock. seems he had a hole just large enough for the keys to slip out his pants pocket and down his leg. Of course the next question to me was have you ever lost anything at the races.......
Well here goes.
Now I know everyone has lost bolts and tools
at the races, but how about a whole tool box? Yep back in the days of push starts it was cool to leave the tailgate down on the pickup ant set your toll box on it. Worked well till your mom accelerated a little two fast and dumped the whole load out. Not once but a number of times. Just last year I was running late to the Jr. Cowpasture Nationals race, whipped around the corner, the tail gate flys open and out comes the ice chest skidding down 12 street. People will not stop and let you retrieve your pops on a busy Saturday afternoon. I learned I was number one by more than one motorist. Then there was the time I lost the dragster trailer in a towing accident, I even have a buddy that once owned one of those really high dollar open trailers with the tall toll box up front....Yep they whip it into the track one Sunday and no car, seems it fell off in the Arbuckle Mountains and came to rest in the center median, just waiting for it's owner to return.
I got so excited one year after Ross won a race I couldn't remember were I parked the golf cart. The only problem was his wife was on it also.I not only lost my golf cart but my daughter in law as well. Once along time ago I was just starting to race and was pulling my little dragster home from springer, the muffler fell off my truck so as any good motor vehicle operator should do I stopped and kicked the muffler out of the road. The problem was once I got back in the truck I had lost my keys!! I still can't figure that one out. I have a friend who one year was going to Indy, back then we didn't have cell phones and everyone had campers on their trucks so you could swap off driving and get some sleep in the back. These guys stopped for gas and as they went inside the passenger in the camper had to use the restroom. Miles down the road the driver gets thirsty opens the camper to find they left something back at the service station.
I am sure most of you have notice me riding a scooter now during race days, and may have even watched as I wonder around the staging lanes lost. Sometimes I forget were I parked the thing, I may install one of those bicycle flags on it. Anyway enough of the nonsense for now. I am helping locate photo's to restore Jungles Vega should be ready for the CHRR next year.
I have some good history to talk about next time. Take care..Rob
