Nostalgia drag racing can best defined as, Racing Against Time. Point in case we lost two of our giants in Texas drag racing history in the past two weeks. Bobby Langley and Buddy Anderson. I started in the Vintage drag racing scene as we called it before NHRA came up with a Heritage racing series idea. Guyniece and I have some friends back on the coast, Fat Jack and Sam Chastain that were racing their nostalgia cars on a circuit called VRA.
Nostalgia drag racing was not invented for the track operators or promoters to get rich, nor was it ever intended to be competitive. In 1972 NHRA said, No More Front Engine Top Fuel Cars!(Hint...the 72 year cut off!). Nostalgia racing was for the older generation to gather together and enjoy the sport the way they had created it. When Bill Crosby and I envisioned the Ardmore Hot Rod Reunion, our intention was to one day have a event so we didn't have to travel 1800 miles, well here we are. Now I raise the question if a little is good how much is two much?
When I was asked me to develop the Spring White Walls race I was a little hesitant about the competition it would give our Hot Rod Reunion on Labor day. Now there are monthly races at many tracks. The list of Nostalgia events include Tulsa,Denton,Noble, Kennydale, Mokan and on and on. Add the Southwest Junior Fuel, Texas Blown Association events and once again we have created a weekly race series. I have recently heard rumors of organization conflicts, racers selling out and track operators upset with car counts....Guys before we loose what we all started------ it's for fun! Pick and choose your events, don't get burned out on a good thing.
Remember!!!! We Are Racing Against Time.....not each other. Till next time I'll see you in the staging lanes.....Rob
