I saw them standing on a corner
Bathed in ordinary light
They turned away and started walkin'
And faded off into the night
Some years ago they were in fashion
Tonight they couldn't get a seat
They've got themselves a brand new history
(From Revisionism Street)
Glenn Powell and his Revisionism front engine supercharged
dragster both have been part of the Ardmore Dragway
Hot Rod Reunion for many years.
When I first met Glenn he appeared as any ordinary racer.
He began his career in 1959 racing the family 55 Mercury
at Charioteers dragway in Hobbs New Mexico. Before you
turn the and walk out the room let me shed some light on
his extraordinary past. Glenn ordered up a new 1962
Ford Mercury built strictly for racing. With his father as support they began running the
AHRA Grand America Series. They won the Winter Nationals and went on to set many
records with the Mercury, before replacing it with a little 289 Ford powered dragster.
(Glenn Powell May 3 1959 first day drag racing)
It was during these years racing the Mercury that Glenn was introduced to another
racer that lived only 60 miles down the road in Carlsbad NM named D ick Harrell.
The two sparked up a friendship and began racing against one another weekly at Hobbs.
Soon Harrell moved away and Glenn worked at Lovington Ford for a number of years.
Then one night with a phone call the two were reunited and Glenn was offered a
opportunity to combine his hobby of drag racing with his livelihood. He moved wife
Colleen, sons Ocie and Gregg to Kansas City Mo. and went to work for Harrell racing Inc.
Glenn's responsibility with Mr. Chevrolet was keeping the necessary parts and pieces ready
for the race operations and hauling the car coast to coast weekly. In 1970 the highyway life
was getting to be to much. Glenn said good buy to D ick and moved the family back home to New Mexico.
A short few weeks later Mr. Chevrolet faded into the night when he crashed while racing in Canada. Glenn had lost
a long time friend and the world lost a hero,
Today Glenn finds himself in a new seat, running his Nostalgia dragster and helping his son Gregg
race. As Bob Seger would say. He got himself a brand new history.
