Match racing can be traced back to the beginning of racing. not only was the first Drag it out at the local malt shop the begging of organized Drag Racing it also was the roots of Match Racing.
A match race is usually contested by two paid racer to run a best two out of three race's, promoted as the race of the century by track promoters. Normally the track promoter had the two racers split the first two runs and then the finals would be the end of the world as explained by the tower announcer. Although this was the desire of race promoters soon Match races turned into grudge races between the opponents and it was all on the table then. Cam grinders, tire manufactures and other speed products soon jumped on the band wagon advertising in Drag News as last week winner was decided because they were using that manufactures products. By Mid 60's Match Racing was escalating to new heights, and Ardmore Dragway was right there with the best of them.
